چکیده

This paper compares surface signatures of the zonally symmetric and asymmetric modes stratospheric variability, which describe strength polar vortex a planetary wave-1 pattern, respectively. Unlike weak followed by negative Arctic Oscillation–like anomalies, strong wave activity features displacement with deep structure, resulting in positive North Atlantic American cooling about 10 days. Moreover, linkage between stratosphere is examined two reanalyzes four models different configurations, show more robust following due to than weakening vortex. suggests acts as better predictor for cold spells northern U.S. Canada compared

On Symmetric and Asymmetric Buckling Modes of Functionally Graded Annular Plates under Mechanical and Thermal Loads

In the present article, buckling analysis of functionally graded annular thin and moderately thick plates under mechanical and thermal loads is investigated. The equilibrium and stability equations of the plate are obtained based on both classical and first order shear deformation plate theories. By using an analytical method, the coupled stability equations are converted to independent equatio...

Analytical Predictions for Zonally Symmetric Equilibrium States of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex

Equilibrium states of initially barotropically unstable polar vortices are predicted using two different approaches: minimum enstrophy and maximum entropy theories, which have been extended to include flows evolving on the surface of a sphere. Minimum enstrophy theory shows very good agreement with an ensemble of direct numerical integrations of a polar vortex that mixes vorticity mainly on a s...

The effect of zonally asymmetric ozone heating on the Northern Hemisphere winter polar stratosphere

[1] Previous modeling studies have found significant differences in winter extratropical stratospheric temperatures depending on the presence or absence of zonally asymmetric ozone heating (ZAOH), yet the physical mechanism causing these differences has not been fully explained. The present study describes the effect of ZAOH on the dynamics of the Northern Hemisphere extratropical stratosphere ...

Zonally Asymmetric Features of the Tropics

This chapter covers the zonally asymmetric climatology of the tropics. Seasonal or monthly mean weather maps are particularly important in the tropics. The following example illustrates this point. Over the North American continent, the January mean sea level isobar map consists of a large continental anticyclone extending southwards from the Arctic and Canada towards the southern United States...
